A plain guide

Thinking about a weight-loss injection?

You are not the only person in the UK asking. This is a plain look at what these medicines are, why so many people are curious, and what a clinic actually does next. It is not a promise of a prescription.

Why does this keep coming up?

Wegovy and Mounjaro are the names people look up. The medicines behind them are semaglutide and tirzepatide. NICE, which advises the NHS, has said they can be an option for some adults, alongside eating a little less and moving more. NHS England is introducing Mounjaro in stages, starting with people who have the greatest clinical need, so care can grow safely. That space, between public interest and what the NHS can offer today, is why so many people also ask a private clinic.

What would it actually change in a week?

NHS England describes Mounjaro as a weekly injection you give yourself. It helps you feel fuller for longer, and so less hungry. A doctor or nurse shows you how to use it. Wegovy is also taken once a week. A doctor may suggest it when changes to eating and activity have not been enough on their own.

Neither medicine replaces food or movement. If one is recommended, you would still be asked to eat a balanced diet with fewer calories, and to be active. Before any prescription, a clinician should talk through what it can help with, and what it cannot, including side effects.

Is it for everyone?

No. These medicines are generally considered for adults whose weight is already affecting their health. NHS England says they are not recommended if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, and some other conditions rule them out. On the NHS, who can be assessed also depends on where you live, and Mounjaro in GP care is opening first to people with the highest need.

A page cannot tell you whether you are in that group. A prescriber can, after looking at you rather than a headline.

What if you would rather not wait to be asked?

If the NHS cannot see you yet, that does not mean a private prescriber will say yes. It does mean you can ask for a proper review, instead of wondering on your own. HaleWell Clinic is a UK online clinic. You would speak with a UK-registered prescriber about your history, your medicines, and what you want from treatment.

If a medicine is clinically appropriate, it is supplied by Halewell Clinic Limited. Pharmacy GPhC registration is in progress, and no registration number is shown until it exists. If it is not appropriate, you will be told that. Joining the waitlist is free, and it is not a guarantee of treatment.

A few straight answers

  • If I join, will I be prescribed something?

Not necessarily. Joining starts a conversation. Treatment is only offered if a UK-registered prescriber decides it is right for you.

  • Do I still have to think about food and walking?

Yes. NHS England is clear that these injections sit alongside a lower-calorie diet and regular activity. The medicine is there to support that, not to replace it.

  • Is this the same as getting it on the NHS?

The decision is still a clinical one. The NHS is rolling access out in stages, and it varies by area. HaleWell is a private UK clinic. The way in is a waitlist and a prescriber review, not an NHS referral.
